2015 Rav4 vs. 2021 Forester?

EDIT: the price of the Forester is $21K. Sorry everyone, new to posting Help! I need to make a fairly quick decision between two cars. The first is a Subaru Forester with 81K miles for $89K. Second is a 2015 Rav4 with 95K miles for $19K. Both have a terrific service history. I am not so concerned about the price difference, but I am 68 years old and getting ready to retire. I don't drive far on a regular basis but I need to avoid repair bills as much as possible. Opinions?

True, but why get these cars if you don't drive much and dont have small kids? You are paying more for a bigger car you don't sem to need. For example you could get a new Mitsubishi Outlander Sport for $22k, a new Chevrolet Trax for $20k etc. Or a used low miles 2025 Kia Soul under $20k.

Unless that Forester has a solid gold engine block someone's pulling your leg with that $89K price tag

I did not bother to look it up but Subaru had some years with engines which had oil problems especially with lots of short trips. Be sure that the Forester is not one of those. It is not realistic to expect any car with 100K+ miles to not need any maintence. There are lots of things like water pumps, fuel pumps, alternators, master cylinders, suspension components, etc are not designed to last forever so some maintence is more or less normal at higher milage. Toyota made a lot of their advanced safety features standard in 2018 so the 2015 RAV4 may not have them. You did not say what year the Forester was but check to see what safety features it has. It would be a lot different but you can get a new Corolla for not much more than the $21K for the Forester and it would come with a warranty. Unless you are unlucky a new Corolla should also go 100k miles with little if any non-routine maintence if you take care of it and it may outlast you. If you own a place where you could install a charging station it sounds like an electric car could be a good choice for you so also look into those.
If it's just between these two, then I would take the Rav4. Subaru is pretty reliable, but boxer engines tend to be a bit more maintenance heavy. Same can be said about the CVT. Though, I strongly recommend you look into a Mazda CX-5 with the NA 2.5 engine. It'll have similar reliability to the Toyota but be far nicer
