I’m considering buying a 2008 Toyota Highlander V6 AWD from a Subaru dealership and wanted to get some opinions from owners and mechanics before I spend money on a PPI. Details: 2008 Highlander V6 AWD (clean Carfax with no reported accidents) 215,000 km (133,600 miles) White Mint condition all around Asking CAD $12,995 (about USD $9,400) before dealer fees Dealer says it’s been inspected, but I’d still get my own pre-purchase inspection. I’m already aware of the rubber oil cooler line needing replacement but… My biggest concern is the 2GR-FE VVT-i cold start rattle that I’ve read about on some 2008-2010 Highlanders and RX350s. A few questions: How common is the cold-start rattle on 2008 Highlanders in your experience? Is it something most eventually develop, or is it relatively uncommon? If a vehicle doesn’t rattle today at 215,000 km (133,600 miles), is it likely in the clear, or can it still develop later? Is the VVT-i rattle mostly an annoyance, or does it usually lead to expensive repairs? Besides the VVT-i oil cooler line, water pump, timing cover seepage, and suspension, are there any other common issues I should have the mechanic inspect? At 215,000 km (133,600 miles), assuming maintenance records and a clean PPI, would you consider this a reasonable buy? I’d really appreciate hearing from owners who’ve put high mileage on these rather than just internet horror stories. Thanks!

That mileage is nothing for these if it's been looked after, the 2GR is a tank. The cold start rattle isn't a guarantee, my parents had an 09 that never developed it even past 200k miles. If it's quiet now on a completely cold start I wouldn't lose sleep over it but the mechanic can pull the VVT solenoids and check for sludge or wear if you want peace of mind. For that price I'd want to see timing cover seepage addressed or at least documented as minor, some weeping is normal but a full reseal is a big job. Also have them check the rear main seal and the power steering lines where they run near the subframe, those are known to rust out on Canadian winters.
