Subaru outback or forester?
For reference, I’ll be doing mostly short trips with a few long trips. I want to do some off-roading, but nothing serious. I have seen a 2012 outback and it’s manual which I understand the CVTs are notoriously unreliable. But what would you guys choose…
For reference, I’ll be doing mostly short trips with a few long trips. I want to do some off-roading, but nothing serious. I have seen a 2012 outback and it’s manual which I understand the CVTs are notoriously unreliable. But what would you guys choose between the two? Or are there any others?

I’ve never had a problem with my CVT if that helps. but I also never use it just for the fun of slapping gears I have a manual if I want to do that. Which one do you like more or is the cleaner better deal? They both have pretty much same MPG and ground clearance so there’s no real better choice based off what you said?
The manual Outback is the move here. Those older CVTs can be a headache and finding a stick shift in decent shape is getting harder every year. Way more engaging to drive too, especially if you're taking it on dirt roads For what you're doing the Forester is fine but the Outback gives you a little more space for gear and that longer wheelbase helps smooth things out on bumpy terrain. Either one will handle light off-roading no problem
Ah I’d just heard online they could be a bit dodge. Plus, I think I’d prefer a manual as it’s my first car 😁. I honestly think I like the outback a bit more, as far as I’m aware, there isn’t a huge difference in technical ability offroad and it seems to be comfier with a bigger boot which is perfect for me. Would you say the ‘X mode’ is good? I saw a 2012 Outback although obviously it won’t have it on, but I can look at a later model 😁
When you say light off-roading, will it do rocky inclines? Nothing silly, but like a rocky bumpy track? It seems to be fairly capable. But thank you 😁
CVTs are fine as long as maintenance has been done. CVT fluid should be changed every 60K. Subaru USA claimed the fluid was lifetime (except for towing), while other parts of the world had a 100K km service interval. The solenoids in the valve bodies can fail on some older units and it requires a replacement. Manual is always preferred if you can find one, but they are fairly rare. Avoid early FB25 series engines (prior to 2015) unless the short block has been changed.
