Right now I'm driving a Rav4 that's great but boring and I want to get something fun to drive again. I'm also parking in the city more lately and considering downsizing from an SUV so a hatchback seems like a good compromise to keep some of that cargo space. I've owned a few muscle cars and SUVs and the high 200s to low 300s horsepower feels like a sweet spot for me. These look interesting but I would like to hear your suggestions Volkswagen Golf R Toyota GR Corolla MINI Countryman JCW Mazda CX-30 (probably the safest choice but least thrilling)

EV not an option sadly
Meh. These are so boring to drive. Slushbox automatic + turbo is unexciting, softly tuned suspension and torsion beam rear, and a slow steering rack.
I’d go with a Golf GTI or Golf R.
MINI stopped making the Clubman a couple years ago I think.
This is what I’m thinking. I’m in a similar place looking for something practical but fun, so looking at hatchbacks and wagons and sporty SUVs, and feels like this X3 is the way to go Then again, ownership cost might be a lot higher than a golf R
I'm in my 30s and swap cars every 3-4 years. A 15 year old Camaro/Mustang/Challenger is not expensive. Also look up the GR Corolla, it's a totally different car than a regular Corolla
Do you have a way to charge an EV? Probably going to get slammed by the ICE gatekeepers, but our MachE is absurdly fun to drive, both for ludicrous acceleration and being way better than you would think, given an EVs weight, in the twisties. On another note, my EB Maverick is pretty damn fun to drive too.
Or an EV6 GT or Ionic 5N. Stupid fast
Avoid SUVs, less fun. Mini hatchback and Mini Clubman are more fun than Countryman. used Hyundai VELOSTER N 2.0T
golf Rs have insane tuning potential with the DSG but are rly straight line rockets pre-mk8 when they got the rs3's torque vectoring rear diff. water pump aside they're also v reliable and parts are readily available and relatively cheap online. MINI also makes the Clubman JCW which imo looks better than the Countryman and will drive better if u want something a bit more unique.
Golf R all the way. Or GTI. Loved my MK8 for the most part
GR Corolla is a blast and I could NOT justify its price with the interior being a Corolla. You may feel differently though. Golf R is my pick. Bonkers when you want it to be, refined and comfortable when you don’t. Super practical too. Countryman JCW is, I believe, slower than both and sits higher up so it may not handle quite as well. Also maintenance costs are relatively high. I’ve owned a MINI Cooper S and a Golf R, both for more than a decade, and the Golf was WAY less to maintain. CX-30 is not exciting but if you like it, not a bad choice.
Golf R or GTI. Just make sure you're okay with the infotainment being laggy and not intuitive. Very fun and nimble cars that retain daily driver comfort.

Out of those, the GR Corolla is the one that'll actually make you smile every time you turn the key. The Golf R is quick but almost too refined, you don't feel the speed the same way. The Countryman JCW is fun in a go-kart sort of way but the interior will rattle like a tin can after 30k miles. If you're not dead set on AWD, throw the Hyundai Elantra N and the GTI into the mix too, way more practical than the GR and still a riot.
I feel the Mini/GR/Golf R are all a good start, all with their ups and downs. I’d definitely take a look at the Hyundai Veloster N/Kona N, Civic Type R and GTI as well. There’s plenty of other options too if year isn’t an issue like the older WRX hatchback and the Focus ST/RS. The Mazda is nice but I feel it’s more comfort focused than fun.
I had a loaner Acura rdx and I felt like it was fun to drive but still fairly practical. The GR Corolla is the real one on this list. The mini cooper will leave you on the side of the road.
Civic SI or hybrid too! Hatch of course
CPO X3 M40i is a decent middle ground here. RWD based that’s decently fun, and tons of tuning potential with the B58.
Have you looked at the Kia K4 hatch? I test drove one, and I really liked it.
Unfortunately there aren’t many fun hatchbacks these days left over most manufacturers are leaning to SUVs. I’ve heard the Mazda CX-50 is quite fun to drive in that vein. I may also suggest an alt. Keep the RAV4, buy an older fun to drive hatch like an 80s GTI or something like that for weekends/ summer car
I’d go golf r for sure. Such a fun car to drive. The only thing missing in your list is the civic type r/integra type s.
