I have never had a proper skincare routine before. I used the adapalene gel back in college for acne which worked well along with medication. And I use sunscreen sporadically, but I know I need more than that. These are some products that I already had, plus what was recommended to me recently, but I have no idea what to apply in which order and at what time of day. Obviously I know sunscreen goes in the morning, and cleanse the face morning and night (I think?), but for the rest… I’m lost! Please help me figure out what order to do this in! Products pictured: Cetaphil gentle clear pore clearing acne cleanser (2% salicylic acid) CeraVe am Face Moisturizer 30 spf CeraVe pm face moisturizer Torriden 5D Hyaluronic acid serum Torriden 5D Hyaluronic acid soothing cream The Ordinary Glycolic Acid 7% exfoliating toner Generic adapalene gel If I don’t need all of this then please let me know what to cut from the list! Open to all suggestions haha.

I am not currently using the adapalene gel, and I should have mentioned in the post my skin gets very sensitive when I do use it (like even the mildest sunscreen burns and stings my skin). I can only really use it twice a week at max before it really starts to hurt. When I was using it in college I used it every other day for 5-6 months and it was miserable, but it did work for my acne. Currently I am acne free beyond the occasional breakout around my period. I am definitely a low maintenance kinda person, so I love hearing that I don’t need to use all of this haha.

Ah okay that changes things a lot. If you're basically clear except for the period breakouts, there's no reason to push through a retinoid that makes even sunscreen sting. That stinging is worth flagging though, because when a plain moisturizer or a mild spf burns, it's usually a sign the barrier is already compromised, not that the products are wrong. Adapalene on already-sensitized skin just keeps that loop going. For where you're at the low maintenance version is the right one. Gentle cleanse, a barrier-friendly moisturizer, a real sunscreen in the day rather than the SPF moisturizer doing double duty, and keep one spot-focused BHA around for the period breakouts when they show up. You don't need a nightly active at all. If you ever want to go back on adapalene, the twice-a-week short-contact thing (apply, leave 20 min, rinse) tends to be way gentler than what you did in college. But if you're clear and comfy, I wouldn't bother. Are your breakouts more the deep sore kind or surface stuff?

Fwiw you have more actives here than you need to run at once, so the win is spacing them out, not using it all nightly. The thing worth flagging: your salicylic cleanser, the glycolic toner, and the adapalene are all exfoliating/acne actives, and stacking all three on the same night is a fast track to a wrecked barrier. Even Differin's own guidance says don't layer adapalene with AHA/BHA. Rough shape: AM - cleanse, hyaluronic serum on damp skin, then the CeraVe SPF moisturizer. PM - cleanse, adapalene on dry skin, then the Torriden soothing cream and the CeraVe PM on top if your skin feels tight. Park the glycolic toner for now and only add it back one night a week once adapalene feels boring. Are you starting fresh or already been on the adapalene a while?

Completely agree with this! You took the words out of my mouth. The only thing I would add is that OP considers a brightening product for the hyperpigmentation that will occur as the acne is leaving its mark. Cosrx discolouration serum will help with that. Formulated with Tranexamic Acid, Niacinamide and Alpha Arbutin.

Also agree with everything here! Definitely look into getting a gentle non active cleanser, using the salicylic acid one every morning and evening might end up being too much. And I would also try to find a dedicated spf that works for you, I’ve had really good luck with Korean formulations. You can also use the glycolic acid on armpits, knees, elbows, feet anywhere really that could use some exfoliation! I used to use it on my face all the time but I have found better suited products and now just use TO glycolic acid on my body.

i would also just add, you need a proper sunscreen. especially with those kinds of actives, the moisturizer with a bit of spf in it, isn’t going to cut it
