Please read for full context: I bought a 2013 F150 with 170k miles a few months ago for $9k - base model 3.7 V6, in good shape mechanically with a fresh water pump (only weak point on those motors) and fresh tires/brakes. My daily is a VW GTI and it’s no longer big enough to take my dogs and kids, which I do a lot for hikes/camping. I like keeping the small daily for great MPG and fun manual driving, and it’s nice having a pickup since I’m a rural homeowner and do actually use it (hauling garbage to the dump, hauling landscaping materials, etc). I got a softopper for it so it could fit two car seats and put the two big dogs safely in the bed, but they HATE riding back there. It’s not the end of the world, but I’ve wound up letting them ride in the back most of the time since I take them on a daily run without a kid. I’m not desperate to get rid of the truck, but I saw a trade deal on FB for a guy wanting to trade a 2006 Lexus GX 470 with 220k miles for a pickup. He’s willing to meet. Seems to be in good shape and has all regular maintenance done. These vehicles sell for roughly the same price in my area with the respective mileage. I don’t have to make the trade, but it might just be nicer for my spoiled GSDs to have AC in the back of an SUV instead of a truck bed. Thoughts on trading? 7 year older vehicle with 50k more miles, but it is a Lexus. Plus the truck has a bad radio and faulty rear passenger door wiring harness, which I got replacements for and just haven’t had time to install. TLDR - trade 2013 F150 with 170k miles (base, NA 3.7 V6 and tow package) for 2006 Lexus GX 470 with 220k?

dogs not enjoying the truck bed is pretty clear sign they want the upgrade too. that lexus is basically a fancy 4runner and those engines go forever if the maintenance is real. 220k is not nothing but a well kept gx will outlast most things on the road only thing i worry about is losing the pickup bed for dump runs and lumber. you said you actually use it and suv cargo space is different beast, dirt and mulch inside a lexus feels wrong somehow if the dogs are priority though this trade makes sense. they get ac and you get a tank that will run long as you dont skip timing belt
All pretty much what I was thinking. The SUV cargo space is a downgrade, but the Lexus has a tow hitch and my closest neighbor has a flatbed trailer I can borrow any time. I already made due with that and my wife’s SUV for a couple years before having a truck. Biggest downside is that my wife already gave me a ton of shit for buying the truck lol so it will be another round of scolding, but I can handle her 🤣
All fair points. I think they hate the bed because I spoil the heck out of them so they’re attached at the hip (and it’s hot, even though I’ve done stuff to get them airflow). I have tried putting bedding and other ways to make it soft. It’s mainly being separated from me, which like I said I can make them get over I just have some buyer’s remorse. None of it is a big deal either way. If I had to do it over again I would have gotten the SUV but I suppose you’re right that the cost of tax/title and insurance swap again is probably not worth the hassle. I’m probably just being restless, like you said
Why do they hate it in the truck bed? If you haven't already, putting a grippy surface on the bed floor can help dogs a lot. Also opening the rear window (if equipped) to get the HVAC to help a bit may solve. Not sure the problem but I've seen those help a lot. Personally, I'd be pretty hesitant to take on a 20 year old 220k mile vehicle, particularly if I don't know the owner. Better the devil you know. Plus using a truck bed versus towing a trailer are different. It's not a huge thing but if you have to borrow a trailer to take the garbage out, that's going to get old quick. On top of all that, you just got this truck a few months ago. Transacting on vehicles is expensive. Just going off what's written here, I'd lean toward you've got shiny object syndrome. Either that or you haven't fully realized/articulated your needs in a vehicle. No shade intended, I do it too and that's why I can see it lol. I'd pump the brakes and reevaluate in a couple months or more.
