I run a dispatch operation, and one of the biggest headaches is handling incoming calls while coordinating drivers and dealing with customers. Hiring a full-time receptionist feels like an extra cost that's hard to justify, especially when call volumes fluctuate throughout the day. Missing calls isn't ideal either because every missed call could be a missed customer. Lately I've been wondering whether an AI voice receptionist could be a practical alternative. Personally, I don't think using one is necessarily a bad thing, especially if it can answer basic questions, route calls correctly, and make sure customers aren't left waiting. For those of you in dispatch or similar service businesses, how are you handling your calls? Have you stuck with a receptionist, outsourced it, or found another solution that works well?

Role
You’re just flat out lying at this point. When I worked at a consultancy who implemented AI on the phone we got to hear some of the QA calls. The vast majority was people screaming for a human then getting frustrated and hanging up. Every hang up is a job lost a revenue straight to a competitor. No one likes talking to robots.
Fair callout and that failure mode is real, I've seen it too. But a lot of that was older IVR-style bots that loop people until they hang up. Voice AI has moved fast since then. The setups that work now have instant escalation. Not every implementation is good, plenty still ship it badly. But writing it off entirely based on older calls misses how much this has actually changed.
Agreed, but also, in the off chance that isn’t the case or if someone else is interested, we can help. Feel free to DM or check us out at gethelpt.com. Thanks
No you don't run a dispatch operation. You are fishing for ideas about AI receptionist.
This post has to be total BS. You feel hiring a full time person to answer phones for a dispatch operation is a waste of money? A dispatch operation is basically the ONE industry that requires a full time human to answer phones more than any other industry in the universe.
When I call a business and hear an AI voice on the other end - unless it is directing me to the appropriate human - I hang up and dial a different company. NO ONE enjoys talking to robots. Either run your office as a one man operation and handle all calls personally or decide that your time is better spent on other tasks and hire a receptionist.
Brand new account? Check. Asking about a problem no one has. Check. Hinting at an AI receptionist solution he has written? Check, check and check. You do realize we get 100 of these fake question posts a week on this sub.
what's your call volume actually look like across a day? like is it 40 calls with a lunchtime spike, or is it steady drip. asking because the thing that decides whether callers clock it isn't the script, it's latency and whether it copes with people talking over it. i build these for a living and the demos all sound great because nobody interrupts them. get the vendor on a live call and cut across the bot mid-sentence, see if it stops or ploughs on. same call, listen for the gap before it answers you, anything past about a second and people hear it. routing logic you can fix later
Just to be clear. If I call to talk to a person, and you put me on with a clanker, I am hanging up and trying someone else. Receptionist / admin in a job with a large or moderate call volume is just part of the job. If you can't handle the calls on your own , this is why the role exists
Ai receptionist mostly suck but it depends on the business and the customers. In 3-5 years they'll probably be good enough that it won't matter
