I work in healthcare in HR (and should probably be able to answer my own question - but I can look at things objectively for everyone but myself). The organization I work for is small and chaotic - still very much operates as a reactive entity despite being midsize and desperately in need of structure and appropriate leadership personnel. I took the position, at a significant pay cut, because I had been laid off and looking for about 3 months. I have been there for 6 months and have somehow become owner of everything - from HR related to tasks that just don’t fit with what the core leadership staff don’t want to do (supervising problem employees in unrelated depts, marketing and ordering supplies). I generally think they mean well and have struggled with whether or not they know that they’re taking advantage. Regardless I have been keeping an eye out and have an offer signed for a position that is an increase in title, joining an org w structure and a 40% pay increase. I was set to put in notice and work out my two weeks but today inherited a personal dumpster fire that will require me to travel the entirety of week two of my notice. I don’t necessarily want to burn bridges, and they have a contract with a pretty well known consultant in the very niche corner of healthcare, so I don’t necessarily want to be eligible for rehire but also don’t want the consultant out there floating around viewing me as unprofessional. Since they don’t know I planned to provide notice and don’t know that I’ll need to be out next weeks is the best move to give them one week and wrap up what I can? The alternate I guess would be to offer that I work the week and be available for a few hours as I’m able during week two?

I've heard that a 1 weeks notice but saying that you only had a week due to personal/family emergencies are usually fine, but ymmv.
They’d fire you after giving notice too
Two weeks notice is a courtesy. They’d fire you with No Notice if they needed to. I’d categorize this as “shit happens” tbh. The scope of the role changed and it’s Not For You.
Corporations screw over thousands of people every single day in much worse ways than only providing one weeks notice. Fuck em. If you need a reference in the future just have a friend do it.
Remember notice when leaving a job is a courtesy. These companies/ organizations would fire anyone on a dime if needed. You owe nobody anything. Don't burn bridges, but never feel bad for doing what's right/ best for you
Give them the week.
You give the notice. You work the week. If your don’t like it. You walk out .
What would you tell a staff person? I gave no notice as my higher-up pissed me off. She wanted me to head the opening of a new clinic and I’ve done that and it was a lot of long days plus interviews. I felt like she backed me into a corner. Here’s some context: One of the unofficial mottos was manage up or manage out. Now I’m not stupid. First I checked my messages between me and my partner to make sure I hadn’t said anything to piss him off prior( would need his support mentally) then I checked my checking and saves account, once I was satisfied that I was good financially then I said I dont need this job and I quit. It actually worked out because life got real messy with deaths ( which means travel) and my cancer came back which means so many appointments that I wouldn’t have been able to work anyways. Chemo brain fog is real and there’s no way i could have managed a clinic. These days I cant remember my own appointments.
