My 2015 Ford Flex with 235k miles on it needs a new transmission. Sexy flexy needs retired. I am 42 and I have an 8 yr old and two grown children, and even though I mostly just have the 8 yr old with me, because he’s in sports I don’t think I can lose the cargo space of a small to midsize SUV. I’ve test driven a RAV4 new and used. Also a Toyota BZ. I think I may also test drive a Honda CR-V. I did like the Bz I am just a little worried about a full electric and not sure if Toyota’s EV track record. I read that there was a software problem that caused some of them to stop while driving hopefully that’s resolved. I honestly liked how the BZ drove over the RAV4 but it’s not like the RAV4 was bad. The RAV4 seems like I’ll end up paying more and financing/incentives aren’t as good. Very little RAV4 inventory. I do drive a lot. I think a hybrid or electric would be good. I think Tesla’s are too expensive to ensure. Other options would be the Mitsubishi Outlander, Corolla Cross… Any input, suggestions? I live in the Houston area. TIA.

The vehicles you list are not actually considered mid-size SUVs. For mid-size, you’re looking at Toyota Highlander, Honda Passport, Subaru Ascent, etc. If you want RAV4 size, but not a RAV4, might look at the Crown Insignia or a Venza. Subaru also has a Trailseeker (electric) or a Forester (hybrid).
Oh okay then compact SUV? I feel like the Corolla cross is smaller than a RAV4. I haven’t test driven one yet but the cargo space seems too small

The Corolla Cross is smaller than the RAV4 and the CR-V. There’s subcompact, compact, then midsize. Cross is subcompact, RAV4 is considered compact. Highlander is mid-size.
🤣 yes I’m aware anything I buy is an upgrade. I actually loved my Flex but I don’t even have a back up camera. BUT I do have a CD player! And it’s Super roomy. I don’t really need as much space and I really need to save on fuel.
At the time I got the Flex I had 2 high school kids and an infant and a husband. I’m down 3 people. I can live without THAT much room.
honestly i wouldn't trust the bz yet, toyota half-assed that one with subaru parts and the charging is slow as hell. if you drive a lot a regular hybrid makes more sense than full electric in texas anyway, that heat kills range. cr-v hybrid is real nice for the cargo space and the mpg, and honda's been doing hybrids longer than most people remember. test drive one before you decide, the interior feels more open than the rav4
Come on, coming from a Ford Flex and you didn't look at the Hyundai Santa Fe, the spiritual successor? Jokes aside, do you still need something the size of the Flex (which is almost like a minivan size without being an actual minivan) or you think you can downsize since it is only the 8yo now?
Toyota has recently improved the BZ. The 2026 model goes 314 miles and charges much faster than the previous version. If you charge at home, fast charging time isn’t as important. Toyota is committed to EVs after getting a bit of a late start. They are increasing production and sell several other EV models in other markets that the USA doesn’t see. The BZ is much nicer to drive than the rav4, and is a good size for family stuff. I wouldn’t be worried about reliability or Toyotas commitment. EVs have few moving parts and most of the kinks have been worked out. The biggest downsides of buying a new EV is the rapid depreciation. If you keep the vehicle for a long time this won’t matter so much. When you go to sell, a rav4 will be worth more than a comparable BZ, but for me— I’d rather have a vehicle I enjoy every day than an extra grand in my pocket in 8-10 years.

I'd skip the bZ unless you can charge at home and you're comfortable with Toyota's first gen EV quirks. the RAV4 hybrid is the safer long term bet
