Hi friends. Looking to hopefully purchase in the next 6 months. I work as a medical device rep and drive about 4-5000 miles a month. I drive with all the products needed for surgeries so space is a need. Located in Southern California. I’ve driven a VW Golf Alltrack and Subaru Outback and VW Tiguan for the last few but my Tiguan is on the fritz. My extended 120 thousand mile #Warranty will be up and I’m currently trying for a buyback as it’s a 50-50 chance as to whether or not the accelerator will work when I turn the car on. In an ideal world, I would be able to acquire a Golf R estate, but obviously those are not sold here in the US. I’ve been considering a certified V6 cross country but I’m wondering if prioritising fuel efficiency would be better for my needs. I’ve been considering a Ford Maverick, Toyota Crown Signa, or RAV4 as well because of this. Less than $40,000 would be ideal. I’m tired of spending upwards of $1000 in gas every month.

Do you want a sedan or an suv? Because a larger late model es or Avalon will be great for eating up the highway miles, and getting good gas mileage, even with the V6 never mind the hybrid. You can also probably look at a several year old RX or NX if you want an SUV. I'm focusing on Comfort here more than sporty Dynamics based off the three options you proposed, so I'm leaving sporty options out.
Kinda considered a Prius V for that reason. They’re known well and head gaskets and batteries can be fixed/replaced easily enough. Could always have something newer for my wife so I get max reimbursement. The mileage compensation is for cars 5 years or younger. I try to maintain the car well, just have had bad luck with the two of my 3. The Alltrack was amazing. And unfortunately had an accident. The outback blew a headgasket 4000 miles into my ownership so clearly it wasn’t taken care of. And the Tiguan should have been lemoned a long time ago.
Wagon would be my first pick. SUV probably second because the lift gate/hatch makes life a lot easier. Lots of people make their Tesla sedans and bmw sedans work, but I find the trunk to be a little small and inconvenient. Hadn’t thought of the RX or NX hybrids. Those are pretty nice to be in.
Personally, I would say get a high mileage car just out of warranty on the cheap that was obviously used by another sales rep like yourself and set aside repair money. At 4-5k miles a month you're running yourself out of even a 120k warranty in under 3 years. I think with that kind of mileage you drive you're honestly better off just getting a depreciated high mileage car with good maintenance history, keeping up on the maintenance, and seeing how long it goes for you before something major fails.
if you're doing 5k miles a month in socal you're basically living in your car, so comfort matters almost as much as mpg. the rav4 hybrid will sip fuel and hold a ton of stuff, but the seats get old after hour 3. crown signia would be cushier and still get mid-30s without trying. maverick hybrid is a solid pick too if you don't mind the interior feeling a bit econobox skip the v6 cross country, you'll just be back at the pump crying. and as someone who's drummed on enough dashboards waiting at traffic lights, a quiet cabin is underrated when you're doing that many miles
Check out Volvo CPO, they come with a one year unlimited miles warranty. Get a hybrid.
