UPS For high end PC?

Necessary? No. Nice to have? Yes.

Mines been rock solid for years, now I'm getting brownouts every couple of months. Coincidentally, a data centre just opened up a km down the road in an old industrial park.

Given the skyrocketing cost of components, I think insurance in the form of a UPS is probably not a terrible idea.

A UPS has uses but it won't do much versus a direct lightning strike. If the home's ground or whole home surge protector doesn't handle the strike, the UPS isn't going to either.

I’d argue it’s necessary if you experience loss of power semi frequently. I lived in Houston and we had hurricanes and other weather things of the sort that resulted in us losing power. My PSU failed after less than 2 years.. anecdotal but I’d recommend a UPS or a good surge protector

Only if you live in an area/suburb with dodgy power issues that kill electronics and have frequent outages.

Also important for new PCs is getting one with a pure sine wave output. It used to be that PCs were fine with simulated sine wave, but some newer PSUs, especially high efficiency models, will freak out and shut off if they receive a stepped sine wave.

How's the power quality in your area? Solid, or do you often have black/brown outs? If power quality is an issue, you might want to get a UPS. If only to give yourself a few minutes to execute a clean shutdown when power gets weird. Sydney is probably not going to have weird power issues like you would see way out in the country.

UPS are like insurance. Nice to have, but not necessary. Interestingly enough, I have 2. One is enough, 2 is overkill. If you're gonna get one, make sure you get one with some wattage headroom and more importantly, PFC. That way it delivers stable power to sensitive computer electronics. Can get something from cyberpower around $220, can prob find something else thats pretty good for cheaper too. Its great insurance for a bios update, thats for sure.

Is your power unreliable? Do you do important work such that your computer randomly turning off would be a problem? If you answer yes to both questions, then a UPS is probably a good investment. Otherwise, a UPS is nice to have but not a necessity.

Get a good surge protected power bar for all your electronics.

A decent power strip offers almost the same level of surge protection, it just doesn't supply you power to let u manually shut ur pc down in a powet outage. I am also in sydney and have never used a UPS, noone I know uses one either. To be fair most people use power strips to have more outlets so they're already receiving most of the benefits.

Yes, please! Protect that graphics card. People forget a random lightning strike can take out a PC even though your home's ground should prevent that. Also current models can clean up your incoming electric , meaning your pc uses less power. Some work as battery back ups. And of course it gives you time me to save your work and properly shut down. If you got a $4000+ pc it's dumb not to have a UPC.

I live in a third world state called California where PG&E will shutdown power if it gets windy because they don't want to be held liable for possible fires. If you experience power loss at least once a year then I would get one. Windows can become corrupted when you experience power loss but most of the time it can correct itself. No power loss? Just get a good surge protector.

Our storms can get pretty bad, last year I had a power outage while gaming and nothing happened. I was scared af for my pc. Either I get a ups or I dont game in severe storms

For any PC worth more than 200$ absolutely a requirement in my book also get one that also can surge protect your internet if you don't have fiber a surge from the coax line cancooke your modem, router and every wired device on your network

Look into power stations. Better battery. Better battery life. About the same price.

A UPS is really nice if you have little power spikes or live in a stormy area prove to some outages. Not needed in a city or most suburbs, but very nice to have. I will argue that having one for your wireless router/modem/gateway is more important. It's very nice to still have Netflix on your charged up devices while everyone else is still in the dark
