It's a 2012 Subaru Forester, started fine 2 days ago when I went on a drive and now it's refusing to turn on. I was going to try jumping it, but it's late and my roommate doesn't get back from their trip for 8 hours. Anybody able to tell if I'm making a big deal out of something small?

Your starter sounds like it’s trying to spin but the battery doesn’t have enough energy to turn the engine. My thoughts, try to get a jump. If it still doesn’t turn on then it’s either your starter or a seized engine. But chances are your battery is dead, maybe you left a light on by mistake which drained your battery.
Sounds like either a dead battery or a locked up starter. There is a battery light above the oil light, which could be an indication of a dead battery, but not always. If you have a multimeter, even a cheap one, you could measure the battery voltage. If it's much below 12.5 volts then it is dead. They should normally be in the 13.8-15v range, depending on the charging circuitry of the vehicle. If you can place the multimeter connected to the battery somewhere you can see when you try to crank it and the voltage drops to nothing, the battery is definitely bad.
First things first your battery needs to be checked with a cold cranking amp test to see if it will put out the proper 12-14 volts under load.
