Rufus vs Ventoy for clean Windows 11 install in 2026 – which one is more reliable?
Hey everyone, I'm about to do a clean install of Windows 11 (24H2) on a new NVMe drive. I've always used Rufus, but I see Ventoy getting a lot of hype lately.

I've not really used Ventoy much, always been a Rufus guy. Loved it for its speed (like, an 8GB ISO written in under a minute!) and reliability. I think the main reasons for using Ventoy is either: Because you don't have a Windows PC (since Media Creation Tool and Rufus are Windows only. Ventoy can be run on Linux and on Mac using Mactoy). or Multiple ISOs on one drive.
Basically this. Ventoy is awesome if you want to have one bootable flash drive with a bunch of different handy tools (ISOs) in one, but if you're just installing Windows I'd just Rufus and not think about it.
Simple answer: Ventoy is for IT pros, and Rufus is for you.
Not only that but if I recall they offer the option to set a username in advance, enable the offline install with no MS account and without having to open CMD during the installation which is a plus if you don't want to mess with commands.
They both do different things. I'd use Rufus for home stuff, it gives you options ventoy doesn't out of the box.

USe RUFUS, create your installation usb stick. UNCHECK ALL the boxes rufus gives you before creating. When rufus does its thing go to https://schneegans.de/windows/unattend-generator/ Run through the list and check/uncheck what you want/need. Down the bottom you have the "download XML file" When rufus has made your usb stick place this XML file in the root of you usb. Put it in the PC you want to install windows. Now the installation will be using the settings you set in the XML file. Result- A very clean and without a microsoft account windows 11 installation. I always use this file to install a windows machine.
wait. no one uses media creation tool? edit: I'm assuming active PC is windows. idk if media creation is available for linux.
Rufus is the most reliable creator tool, bar none. Even more so than Microsoft's own.
As someone who used both a lot and wishes Ventoy just worked - Rufus by a mile is more reliable for Windows 11 in particular. I CONSTANTLY was failing installs, etc. etc. on Ventoy
