Any idea what this issue could be? Won’t start even with a jump start. Lights dim completely and back. Started happening after getting a new slightly smaller battery (old was 80AH / 740A, new 70AH / 640A) 2.2 engine diesel Opel Vectra C Maybe a cable or starter? Last time it happened I just fiddled with the battery cables and insulation cover and it worked. But this time it won’t work at all. Usually when it starts it runs really well.

I changed battery because it started taking more and more attempts to start it and one day it was flat. It was a really old battery. Changing to a new battery, they had one a bit smaller but they said it should be good still. Two mechanics confirmed it’s good. But looking online it seems that it’s recommended 700+ CCA to start this engine. I also noticed recently that the new smaller battery can easily be pushed to the front and back maybe 3cm. Nothing is holding it in place. Which made me think maybe a cable has been pulled or something. Or maybe it’s just too weak battery. Even with jumpstart we can’t get a start now though. It has stopped like this in the same garage 2 times now, and it’s followed by a very steep hill to drive down, maybe the battery moves in some way when I drive down. I do live in a warm country, where winters only go to 20 degrees, and so far it seems to be struggling in 40 degrees, which should make things easier if anything
Will have a mechanic come and try jumpstart it properly. Do you think it could just be a bad starter, or sounds more like a broken circuit or just too weak battery? The smaller battery literally moves like 3cm back and forth if i push it with my hand
Its just the wrong battery for the application. You shouldn't be able to move it at all, and the fact that you can means it hasn't been clamped down properly. It will fail pretty quickly due to vibration.
It’s just the wrong battery for this vehicle. It’s too weak and too small physically because it shouldn’t be moving.
Is it 640A or the 470? I though 470 maybe was the model or something, but I don’t know tbh. Getting different results when I search it up. 640 is still too low, but maybe closer to what it should be at least? Would just be nice to know if this is the issue. Already bought 2 batteries and two battery «experts» said this was an ideal battery
470 may be a model or group number, you’re right. But either way, multiple starts on an undersized battery can make it to where it’s not charged enough to start it again. Especially so if you’re not driving far or at all between starts, because the battery needs time to recharge off the alternator.
Probably a poor jumpstart attempt(bad connections to the cables) plus a smaller battery with perhaps poor connections to the battery cables. Did someone use a battery brush on the posts and clamps? Getting a smaller battery on a diesel was probably a bad idea. They need tons of power to turn over due to their high compression. If its like this on a summer day, think what'll happen in winter.
This battery is a tad undersized for this car, yes, but not to the degree that it shouldn't start if charged, and it certainly shouldn't be dying by itself overnight. It must not be clamped down properly. There is a retaining clip on the side of it which bolts down to the tray. I think you have a parasitic load situation killing the battery while the car is switched off.
Diesels take a lot of starting torque, I often find if the vehicle being started is totally dead that I need to leave the leads on for 10 minutes before cranking or my leads on their own won't carry enough current. Occasionally I will just have to remove the battery and charge it off the car. Worth removing and cleaning the terminals and their connectors.
It looks like this battery has 470ca and you said you need 700ca…Get a new battery, and get the correct one this time. Unfortunately, some people are happy as a clam when they get to lie with a smile and take your money. A lot of people actually.
Jump starting, in my experience, isn't immediate. On batteries that were dead dead, I had to allow the running car charge the dead battery for up to 30 minutes. If charging for 30 minutes with confidence in the jump cables and their connections to the dead batteries doesnt work, then call a mechanic.
I've had batteries that were bad from the shelf. You saying it's diesel, I would have gone with the biggest battery possible. I feel it's always best to go higher , never lower. If a jump starts the car, then you got a good starter. I would then take back the battery, have them test it and get the proper one or bigger.
Maybe a cable or starter? Measure running voltage drops on the wiring, element by element, starting with the battery terminals. Also: Smaller battery bad.
