Help with understanding wind resistance of roofs

I've been trying to research this on my own but what I could read online hasn't been particularly helpful, plus so much AI misinformation to muddle things. From what I understand, gable roofs aren't as resistant to wind as hip roofs. Pyramid and dome shapes are more aerodynamic so they have higher resistance. What I don't understand is why a saltbox roof has better resistance than gable. Generally, a saltbox roof is just a gable roof with one longer side. So why would the saltbox have better resistance than a gable, when skillion / monopitch (one long slope that acts like a sail) also has relatively low wind resistance?

Good question honestly. I always figured a saltbox was basically a stretched gable too. My guess is the uneven slopes help break up wind pressure instead of hitting both sides equally, but I'd love to hear from someone who knows the engineering behind it becuase it's kinda confusing.

I was under the impression that uneven dimensions create higher stress in one area which leads to greater damage / failure. So a saltbox would be a gable only with added disadvantages, instead of improved wind resistance. I'd like to get some answers from an expert as well.

In addition to the lower peak height, the longer salt box side, assuming it’s oriented to receive the predominant wind direction yields more downforce (longer surface). If you were to flip the salt box orientation relative to the wind direction, you’d get worse performance than a symmetrical design.

Wind velocities are generally higher with elevation, so the saltbox roof won't be subjected to the same lifting/prying force off the lower roof. That'd be my guess. Wind generally comes from one direction anyway, so "balancing" the prying force on both sides isn't a real world scenario.

The shape isn't what's doing the heavy lifting here it's the asymmetry cutting the suction in half. A gable roof acts like an airplane wing when wind hits the broad side, low pressure on top high pressure underneath, and the whole thing wants to peel off in one piece. Saltbox breaks that clean airfoil shape so the forces don't stack up the same way
