Just moved to CO, need recs on wagons/crossovers/compact SUVs for ~$30k or less

Basically title. I’m looking for a car with AWD and as bulletproof as possible when it comes to engine/repairs. I don’t want to be spending thousands every year on repairs and upkeep if possible. Also hoping to have this car for 5-10 years, at least. My wife and I are quite active and anticipate going to the mountains often on ~light~ off-road roads to access trailheads. What make, model, and year of car should I get? Bonus points for good fuel economy. I’ve done a bit of research but I know little about cars, so interested to see what you guys would recommend.

Subarus are popular with active-lifestyle people, and almost all of them come standard with all-wheel drive. Depending on how much size you need, I would check out the Crosstrek (subcompact crossover SUV), Forester (compact SUV) or Outback (mid-size SUV-styled wagon). AWD vehicles are typically a bit less fuel-efficient than similar 2WD vehicles, but most Subarus get respectable fuel economy. The Crosstrek and Forester recently added hybrid powertrains to their model roster, but those would probably be a bit above your ~$30K budget used. The 2016-2023 Crosstrek also came as a plug-in hybrid. --Damon
I'm in Colorado too, SE of Denver. Maybe I just notice them more, but there are a lot of Crosstreks on the roads here. They're obviously very popular. Two friends have Foresters that they are very happy with and that have aged well. I know one is at least 10 years old. Since I'm retired and simply don't drive in snow, I didn't want to pay for AWD and didn't, but the neighborhood Subaru contingent is doing well.
Isn't Subaru pretty much the state car of Colorado? Crosstrek / Forester / Outback (small / medium / large) should fit the bill.
The most common recommendations for reliable compact SUVs are Rav4, CRV and CX-5/CX-50. You can find hybrids in budget for the first 2, for mazda you'll have to stretch your budget a little since 2025 is the first year of the cx50 hybrid and the cx5 doesn't have a hybrid until next year.
Corolla Cross Hybrid if you prioritize bulletproofness and gas mileage. Hybrid Crosstrek and larger hybrid crossovers are slightly outside your budget. A gas Crosstrek is in your budget if you want a little more offroad but don’t get the base model as it doesn’t come with roof rails and I don’t think you can add them as it’s missing hard points so Premium trim or higher.
