Hello everyone, Does anyone know how to liquid cool AMD MI250X GPUs with existing AIO or water coolers? Here is one image from an eBay listing that shows the copper cold plate on top: https://ebay.io/m/fxuCX4 I do not have the cards yet but I estimated the die size to be around 85mm x 65mm. I know there was a discussion of custom liquid cooling for AMD MI210 here (link on top of this post) but those cards have smaller cold plate. AMD MI250x is an OAM form factor card with a larger cold plate. I think these cards are insane value for the price of $1400. Four of them in combination with the baseboard (SuperMicro AOM-MCM-Q OAM - https://ebay.io/m/oMBbRY for ~$2k) + 2000W 48v PSU will be around ~$8000 but we will get 512GB of VRAM with infinity fabric link. This is cheaper than a single nVidia rtx 6000 PRO 96GB. I already know that this setup works with non-HP OAM GPUs but I have not tested HP specific AMD MI250X.

baseboard is $2k. Updated the post with the link.
software is just normal ROCm, no other extra drivers.
on eBay they were going for $1400 due to its OAM form factor and expensive server equipment requirements.
I think manufacturer lock was not investigated enough. I found out those posts were using consumer PCs which may not have enough BAR space to load the card properly or the drivers were not published back then. AMD already has their drivers on their website.

that is the exact plan! My sacrifice of time and money will unlock MI250x cards for localllama users! Last time I posted 2 years ago with the first local AMD MI50 cards and it went up in prices. I hope MI250x will not become expensive after this. /s :D
Good point. But since no one managed to make them work, I don't think everyone starts buying them now. But I agree I should not share this widely. I can probably update this post with the results after several month of trials.
You think wrong, this group has 881K people including plenty of scalpers. When you post a screenshot of them working, they are going to be gone in 15 minutes.

I don't think we can buy those for $100-$200. I will probably buy and use some widely existing CPU/GPU AIO coolers with custom cold plates.

The Mi250x is locked to the HP Cray system. You won't be able to run it on that baseboard, it can only support the regular Mi250. There's a reason why the Mi250x is so cheap. There are more cards than baseboards. That's why you can find the Mi250x used, but you can't find the Mi250 used, even though there were probably a lot more Mi250 units produced.
Do you know why those HP GPUs are locked? Actually, let me ask this. Why are people buying those HP locked GPUs? which system allows them to use those GPus?
Imagine buying all that shit and spending the next 3 months trying to hack it into working right.

i know in fact that some models/specific revisions for it are locked to specific specialized servers but most ones that you find on ebay arent/shouldnt be firmware locked. there are multiple people looking into these cards and the main issue isnt the BAR size, The adapter people use for consumer PCS is often not actually compatible with the amd cards
the working product is not the point, hacking around for 3 months is the point.
When I last looked into these, I remember seeing people having issues with cards being software locked to a manufacturer. That in addition to the scarcity/price of boards with OAM slots convinced me not to go down that route. If you do get it working, PM me, I’d be super interested

On what planet are they $1,400? MI210 with half as much RAM is $4,800 on ebay or alibaba.

I was actually just looking into working on this. My plan is to reverse engineer the OAM baseboard to see if I can design a single OAM module carrier board that can directly connect to a pcie x16 slot. I will be sharing schematics here if I am able to get it working eventually.

Downvoting because you lack the common sense to keep this off of a public forum, if you actually manage to get the HP pulls working which so far nobody has done, the scalpers are going to fuck everyone over.
