Been thinking about this a lot. A shopper asks for something in natural language, or uses on-site search in a more conversational way, and the system basically shrugs. No results, weak suggestions, generic fallback, maybe a category page if you are lucky. That feels especially dangerous now because customers are getting used to systems that at least try to interpret the intent behind the question. If your store still handles edge-case intent like a dead end, I think that probably costs more revenue than most dashboards show. Curious how people are handling no-results recovery these days.

There are thousand apps that help with this. Whats yours?

First thing is having recommendations on the empty results page and on 404s so it isn't a dead end. I'm at Maestra doing site personalization for ecom brands so that's my lane. Better lead with what the person was already looking at, recently viewed items, and keep bestsellers as the fallback for when there's no history Worth heading it off earlier as well, popular items showing the second someone taps into the search bar, before they've typed a thing. Catches a chunk of the queries that would've gone nowhere. And if you're tracking it, compare how the recently viewed block does against bestsellers, that tells you how people are landing on empty results to begin with
