Hello, I am new to the vw beetle world and I knew getting into it I was in for a long ride of unexpected mechanical issues. But I just bought the car under 80,000 miles. And my car goes through oil like it’s free. I’ve changed my spark plugs. I went for an inspection and they said I had an oil pan leak when I went to do the replacement myself there was no oil pan leak at all. (To say I was pissed was an understatement) however that is one of many issues I have with this car. Not only is it eating oil crazy, it also can’t hold a charge. I checked my battery and the battery was fine (I’m gonna replace it because warranty is almost over anyways) but then I checked my alternator and it was completely fine. I don’t know what I’m doing wrong but if anyone can give me suggestions on what might be causing this it would be appreciated. Also I have a clock spring issue which is not a crazy issue but I wonder if that is effecting my battery.

It’s a Volkswagen it’s supposed to do all that, just don’t fall behind on your oiling schedule, and maybe keep some cardboard underneath it when you park. In all seriousness though, If there’s no visible leaks, and you’re still going through it like crazy, it’s likely your piston rings failing and letting the motor burn oil in the cylinders, contributing to the disgusting spark plugs. Volkswagens of that era also have horrible timing cover leaks that lead to catastrophic failures because the timing tensioners require oil pressure to actuate. You can test for oil bypass by unscrewing the cap of your oil fill port, but leave it loosely sitting on top of the hole, idle the car, and watch for It to start shaking and bouncing like there’s gasses rushing out. Also if the tailpipe smokes a lot on cold starts, or just driving around then you have bad oil bypass. Personally as a former 2013 GTI owner who had failing piston rings, just sell that shit to a single mother and don’t buy another German vehicle. All that luxury comes at a price. And it’s the maintainability
