What I think I need: Minimum 32 GB RAM Graphics card Minimum i7 processor (doesn’t have to be intel- I just don’t know the Ryzen equivalent and I know i5 was not enough for what I do) What I do: A decent amount of video editing through CapCut and a moderate amount of toying with InkScape for graphic design, as well as normal Microsoft usage like excel and teams but really even an i3 can handle that so I’m not too concerned with that. I’m tired of dealing with infrequent crashes on my current i7 from Inkscape. I wouldn’t be opposed to gaming but right now I know the laptop I have can’t handle it. I have built a handful of really nice websites through Wordpress but I do not know how to code, yet. I plan to learn. What the future holds: I’m 27, a college dropout, and I’ve kind of had a rough go of life in my 20s. I was going to school for ministry, dealt with a tough breakup (boohoo I know, whatever. I was 22 and dumb and shouldn’t have dropped out of school over a broken heart but that’s what happened). I lost my hearing due to a genetic disease, so a pastoral job isn’t really on the table anymore. I’m one semester short of a degree in Pastoral Theology, so I’m going to use this computer to finish that degree online, just because I shouldn’t have left it unfinished. After that, I’m planning on pursuing a degree in some shape or form towards a software engineering job. I make $40k/year right now and I’m realizing I won’t be able to live the life I hope to have for less than $120k/year, and now that I am effectively deaf, my options are fairly limited. I need a job with a ceiling over $120k because I’m not sure how long I’ll be able to stay in the workforce. I don’t really have any idea what questions I should even be asking. I just need a laptop that can handle whatever a software engineering degree is going to throw at me. I’d like to buy once and cry once. This isn’t where I wanted to be in life at 27, but it’s where I am and I can only pivot from here. Any advice at all is welcome, but specifically for this sub what laptop do I need to get me through the next ~5 years of life pursuing an education that will lead to a job in software engineering? TLDR; I’m a buy once cry once guy. Inkscape, CapCut, and eventually a degree in software engineering. What do I need?

You're gonna need to give a dollar budget. Also if you're near to a microcenter helps
I’m not, but I’m close to a local shop that builds PCs and several Best Buys. I really don’t have a budget. I was hoping for $800 or less for something used from that shop, but I needed to know kind of what to look for. Beyond 32 gigs of ram and a graphics card, and probably atleast an i9 processor or the Ryzen equivalent, I know nothing. Please educate me. I use a computer for work every day, but truthfully I know very little about how they work.
Nah, that doesn't help much. $800 isn't nearly enough for 32GB of RAM either, at least nothing new and you won't be getting a dedicated video card. Without a microcenter deal you're looking much closer to $1600 USD on some of the best deals I could find online (at least for something worth the investment)
I like the price of this lol. Would the graphics processing installed on this be able to keep up with serious video editing and graphic design? It seems like that is where this build is lacking, which is kind of mostly what I need :/
I'd look at the requirements of your software. Maybe ask in the sub for the software to see what machines others are using or if the one I suggested will work fine. It was for AutoCAD when someone asked about it in r/autocad. You could buy the machine and try it out. You'd have 90 days to return it to any Amazon return point.
Inkscape runs better on a dedicated graphics card: Recommended Dedicated GPU with 1+ GB VRAM — NVIDIA GTX 1050+, AMD RX 560+, or Intel Iris Xe. Smooth canvas panning and zooming. Heavy use Modern dedicated GPU with 4+ GB VRAM. NVIDIA RTX series, AMD RX 6000+ for large print files and many bitmap effects.
FYI, the numbers that come after the i7- are more important than i3, i5, i7, i9 etc. There are some i5s that are much better than some i7s. Okay my work computer’s processor is a 13th gen Intel (R) Core i7-1365U. It has 16 gigs of RAM and a 128MB Intel (R) UHD Graphics card. It’s great for the day-to-day tasks but has crashed in Inkscape more than once. I haven’t attempted video editing with it to have any input there but I know I’m looking for more juice than this has.
