A belt from Hanks might last 100 years but these plated buckles don't hold up so well.
Here is my 'antique brass' belt buckle from hanks after about 5 years of daily use. I know it is still functional with the plating rubbed off but for a ~$90 belt why not add a solid brass buckle? Looking online they are as low as $8 each from craft supply…

Yeah you’re right, that buckle is trash. $90 is probably too much to charge for a belt with a buckle like that.
If you're afraid that your brass buckle is going to fail, you need another couple of holes in your belt. Brass has been used for centuries for horse tack that certainly takes more abuse or loads than a man's belt. Brass is more than enough for a belt.
They are Chicago screws, I don't mind so much that the plating has rubbed off them as the replacement buckle was pewter so it matched better anyway.

Which is hilarious because the rest of the belt is just a single hunk of leather, which is cheap as hell. The buckle is the most expensive part.

This 100%. Any good leather maker can do great bifl belts. Hanks might be quality, but it's nothing special. Apparently it's only mediocre quality as well. Plated metal has no place in a belt that pricey.
Do yourself a favor and pry off the rivets on all your belts with a screwdriver. Buy a cheap pack of screw on belt rivets from Amazon and replace all the rivets. Then buy yourself a quality buckle or five and never have to worry about it again.
The leather would fail long before the brass buckle would. A cast buckle like this can hold 500+ lbs before deforming, it would be more like a few thousand before any actual breaking.

I've wound up replacing mine with solid brass buckles that can be had for ~$12. Sucks, but it's a worthwhile investment and easy to change.

For almost the same price I got a belt from simpleleatherbelt.com years ago. Used a brown one almost every day for close to 8 years now, used it camping, swimming(the urge to jump into a good lake can come at any time), for work, everything. Solid brass buckle looks brand new still, like the day I got it. Leather has molded well to my body and feels great. Picked up a black belt from them for dressier occasions recently, probably the only belts I'll need for the next decade or so. Still the same quality as the first belt.
I was in Italy a few months ago and bought a bunch of amazing quality full grain leather belts for less than $50 bucks lol. Makes hanks look like hot garbage tbh.
My belts I purchased from a vendor at state fair have snaps to hold buckle so I can change them quickly. I've had one of these for over 20 years and still quite nice. Vendor was high springs leather, unsure if they are still around but that is mainly because I've never had to replace these belts.

Scaling up the cost would be pretty large.
You can add that brass look back by slightly heating it up and hitting it with a brass wirewheel. Blacksmiths do that frequently.
Have you contacted Hanks about this yet to see what they can/ will do about this? I know their warranty does not cover cosmetics of the buckle but maybe there is something they will do to make it right. It might be worth it to email them. And for what it is worth...it does look like Hanks has a solid brass buckle option on their replacement parts page. Not sure if that was an option when you bought your belt though.
Get a good quality one from BuckleGuy and just swap it out.
I ended up making my own. Bought a blank, solid brass buckle, and leather punch for a lot less than a hanks belt. It’s so easy to build one idk why anyone buys these expensive belts
That top discoloration is probably where your gut hangs over and touches the metal. You’re getting a reaction between skin and the metal.
I hate these plated buckles! I look around for specifically to find a belt with solid brass. Ended up ordering two from Satchel and Page ( https://www.satchel-page.com/collections/belts ). Shipped from Texas to Norway, worth it!

It's steel, which is much stronger than brass. Stainless steel is often more corrosion-resistant, too. If you want a brass look, they can give you a buckle that'll fail and not work or one that'll lose its coating but still work.
