Hi I've been looking around for a self hosted alternative that 3-4 kids can use for voice chat while gaming. They play on playstation/Xbox/PC so no built in option to fit all. Main requirement is that it's an isolated space (ie not just click a button and join a bunch of public chat rooms) and that there's dedicated Android and iOS apps (it's easier for the parents to allow them to install an app than having to deal with browsers) I've tried a couple but they all seem to have their short comings. I thought this would be a relatively straight forward thing but alas.. Getting tired of spinning up different instances and was hoping for some suggestions. - Mumble: Excellent light weight simple setup but, had issues with terrible feedback/echo making it unusable - Haven: Thought I had found the solution until the dad of the 4th kid came over to set up his phone and he had an iPhone.. so no client - Revolt/stoat: Can't find an option for the phone app to join a custom url - Teamspeak: Oriented towards making it easy to join a bunch of different communities. Also, main target seems to be browser rather than apps - Matrix / Elements: Geared towards video meetings, doesn't seem possible to simply start a voice chat

This is most likely excessive, but what about something like this? https://ishback.com/ringo/index.html I was looking at building something similar using a VoIP system. You could make something with either a speaker/mic built in or plug a headset into it. With VoIP you can use something like a Grandstream HT801 as the ‘calling’ part, and with a small subscription to a Sipgate Teams account you could do conferencing. I think PBX has a free tier for up to 4 users if you prefer not to pay.
Yeah this was going to be my suggestion. It works as a PWA so you can just add to home screen and it becomes an app.
I did (very briefly) look into PWA for Haven but seems like Apple don't like those as they miss out on app store revenue and thus limit background and hardware access. I don't have a device myself to test on but figured that might pose some issues for mic access while in the background?
That looks very promising. The one thing I can't seem to find is group voice chat though? Seems geared towards 1:1 calling like a normal phone call?
Yeah, I can see how that's an issue. My "benefit" is that they don't have any options, it's either whatever I end up with or nothing. If they had options I wouldn't really bother with this. You say Element and voice chat, did I miss something? I tried that and I thought it looked good but think I couldn't figure out how to do just voice, only video conferencing

I'm just going through this with my son. First he wanted to be able to message his mates, so I got Element up and running, then he wanted voice chat, so I set that up. But now he's found out real quick how hard it is to get people to change or try something new. One of his mates won't use anything other than messenger kids, which my son doesn't want to use, another only wants to use SMS, but that doesn't work for the third kid who doesn't have a number, just wifi and a tablet. You can't please everyone, or anyone for that matter. Jitsi looks best.
My (pre-teen) kids use a Snikket server with their friends for exactly this. It's not perfect, but it's been working successfully for a couple of years now. They also persuaded their (older) cousins and their grandparents to join, and everyone seems happy enough. Desktop clients are a minor pain-point, but the Android/iOS clients are good.
Facetime or Google? Are those not an option? I assume each kid has a device. My kids just hop in a facetime call with their friends and thats it.
