Hi everyone, Recently, my brother passed away. Although invitations for the service were extended to everyone we could think of, due to holidays and his age when he passed there are a lot of people that knew him well but were unable to attend. The service was recorded. Because it shows a few very vulnerable and painful moments of him and the people close to him (he passed at the age of 24) we would prefer to not just send the recording to everyone. That being said; I want to give the people that were unable to attend a chance to experience the service, in a respectful manner. I have been on the lookout for a service/(docker)app/platform that would allow me to do the following: - Generate a unique link for each person. - Allow them to start the video whenever they want, within for example a month. - Once they start the video, they should preferably be able to pause it but not skip time forwards or backwards. - The video should only be fully played back once, after which the link should become useless. - Ideally, the service would provide some sort of screenshot/screen record protection. I have some experience in self-hosting (Home server eith Proxmox running Home Assistant, Docker etc.) but my programming skills are virtually non-existent. I would really appreciate any help, advice or guidance. Thank you all in advance 🫶🏻. Edit: Thanks to everyone who responded. I am aware of the existence of YouTube private videos and temporary file sharing platforms, but was hoping there happened to be a service/platform/app out there that would allow me to share in the way I described above.

I have looked into it and used both Plex and Jellyfin before, but it’s been a while. Although I believe Jellyfin may offer a good basis which I believe could be further customized due to it’s open source nature, it comes with some challenges I would prefer to avoid. Because some of the people are not very technologically advanced, preferably they would not have to make an account, but also forwarding a link to someone else shouldn’t allow them to play the video again. If it proves that the specific features are not reasonably possible I will likely take the Jellyfin route. Thanks again 🙏🏻

DRM-like protection is not my main concern, it’s just that I would much prefer for people to create their own ideal viewing situation and take their time for it when they have it, but also respect the emotions and feeling behind the service and not skip through it if a “slow moment” is reached. I believe that by providing it in the way I described above a good-faith basis to do this is provided.

Hello, I am sorry for your loss. The issue with your request is that having a recording protection is really difficult. This is not replying to your post but isn't it possible to plan a couple other meetings to invite people that couldn't come the first time. Maybe it is difficult for you to review these footages so it would make sense you don't want to do it. But this would be the best regarding the footage "protection"
Sorry for your loss OP. This sounds like the perfect thing to vibe code. Do you have a Claude subscription? If not, I'd be happy to have it whip something up for you to do as you wish and then selfhost via docker and Cloudflare.
Honestly, the simplest thing here is a private YouTube video with link only. The requirements list is a bit odd, but the only real solution you have there if not just putting the video up on YouTube is to vibe code something.
Terribly sorry for your loss. Might not be the best aligned to your requirements, but something that could help is sealdrop.io (its my service and it has generous free tier, no accounts or anything. Generate a drop link and share it where you need.)
I am sorry for your loss. I also am sorry to tell you that as someone who works in the technical side of the M&E industry with the major streaming providers that protecting a video like you outlined is for all practical purposes impossible and any measures you take are far more likely to annoy legitimate people you want to show the video to than stop someone who isn’t. You’ve got a lot to deal with right now, chasing this down probably feels like a good distraction, I understand, but you are wasting your time if you truly want a working solution.

My Aunt died during COVID. DVDs were sent via mail, as people couldn't travel, you could just put it on cheap USB sticks. Maybe write a nice letter that goes along with it. You could also just set up a screening, where you stream it one time but everyone is logged in watching at the same time. A funeral may not be good for on demand. Sorry for your loss.
Just upload to YouTube with a private link you send to those you want to have it.
We use Virtru at work to send private emails. It gives you the ability to track, revoke, etc. Not sure how large the file is.. and not sure if there is an open source email campaign (?) like software.. But I would think “links that expire” would be a needed feature; hence why the YT private video might be best.. I wouldn’t want someone to use AI on your video and change the content. I too miss all my family that is no longer here for all of the reasons they are no longer here. I am sorry for your loss.

This option probably can't do the requirements fully. However, immich shared album with password protected links with expiry dates might be close enough You can do that per person or group of similar people if you want different expiry times. OR use the api / gui endpoints as a backend and vibe code something in front of it. I've meddled with it in the past done a bit of a mixture (wedding uploads) where ive made a static page themed for the wedding. Vibed an upload JS that called the immich shared folder upload api and framed immich-public-proxy to display the images in the album.
sorry for your loss. honestly a private youtube link is probably your best bet, even if it doesn't have all the controls you want.
